For those not in the know, PUBG is the affectionate shorthand for a game called PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. And it’s the most popular video game on the planet. Really though; in December it passed 3 million concurrent players. Which is insane. It’s become an international sensation since it debuted early 2017, eventually spreading from PC to X-Box, and someday PS4. So naturally, now the CEO of the brand new PUBG Corp, Chang Han Kim, wants to see the game expand to be more than just a game. He wants books, comics, TV shows, and… a movie?
In an interview with Inven Global, Chang said…
“I’d like PUBG to become a universal media franchise based on the game. We want to take part in diverse industries including dsports, movies, drama, cartoons, animation, and more,”
“In fact, we received a couple of love calls from a number of developers in Hollywood and Netflix. Our dream is to build a new game-based culture through various ways like this, and have the lead of that culture.”
It’s actually not that crazy a thought. Netflix themselves have been tapping into pop culture and giving artists the creative freedom, and means to create content to be shared on their service, where it can easily reach an audience of millions. So for them to be down to help produce a movie or 10 episode series based on an intellectual property that already has over 3 million people currently invested in it… is a very real possibility.
After all, if you trace the games inception and inspirations, it all comes from an old Japanese movie called Battle Royale that has a big cult following. So you take a classic intriguing concept… modernize it, westernize it, slap a now well known brand on it… and you might have yourself a big hit. Time will tell if someone makes Chang an offer and they can get the ball rolling soon. Because if there is one thing gamers do besides play PUBG, it’s watch PUBG.
