Marvel announced before that Kendrick Lamar would be producing an exclusive song for their next big release; Black Panther. But today they revealed via social media that he would be producing an entire album called “Black Panther: The Album”, alongside Anthony “Top Dawn” Tiffith, CEO of Top Dawg Entertainment. And they released the first song, titled “All The Stars” featuring SZA, on YouTube. The movie’s director, Ryan Coogler, handpicked Kendrick for the soundtrack. His previous directing efforts were Creed and Fruitvale Station; both critically acclaimed and both starring Michael B Jordan; who also has a lead role in this film, as the villain this time.
Marvel Studios looks to be starting the new year off in a powerful way, by giving the popular but under-used character of Black Panther his own starring movie. He technically debuted in the recent Captain America: Civil War, but now gets his chance in the spotlight with his own film. And what a spotlight it is; with a powerful cast including Lupita Nyong’o, Chadwick Boseman, Danai Gurira, Forest Whitaker, Andy Serkis and Martin Freeman, among others. It looks to be a powerful story as well, that speaks to the desire to see more positive black representation in Hollywood. So giving it a soundtrack created by an artist so in touch with positive black representation and empowerment already, is a powerful and smart move.
If this single track is any indication, this album is gonna be fire! I mean, that’s what happens when the hottest name in hop hop partners with the hottest company in Hollywood, right? If Marvel’s track record has taught us anything, it’s that they should never be underestimated. They currently sit on the blockbuster throne, and yet still manage to stay humble. Check out the track below and see what you think.
