Even though we give credit to the French for creating the bikini in the 1700’s, it was actually debuted much earlier.
Ancient Greek portraits and sculptures show women attending Greek Olympic games wearing attire that resembles the bikini. Showing the midriffs, this attire is thought to be the first ancestor of the bikini, despite being much more conservative. Dubbed “The Bikini Girls,” a mosaic of Roman creation was discovered depicting two women wearing distinctly separate top and bottom attire. This is one of the earliest recordings of the bikini and would later help to define the bikini as being a two-piece design.
Man, those Greeks were really ahead of their time. I’d like to think the 21st century bikini girls are much hotter though. Having running water and electricity probably helps.
