Slowly but surly our sun is dying. But before it withers away into a white dwarf, it will enter its red giant phase. Eventually, the sun’s radius will completely engulf our planet, and our civilization will be burnt to a crisp. Don’t worry, this is still 7 billion years away. However, we will start to see the effects much sooner than that. In about 1 billion years our oceans will evaporate, and if we haven’t jumped ship by then, you can say hasta la vista to the human race.  This is just one of the reasons why we’ve started looking at other planets.  Sure, it’d be fun to go all John Carter on some alien ass, but we really need a place to hang our hats if shit does ever hit the fan.  While there are many different theories on how this will work, here is some concept art of Mars being terraformed.
