Lawrence Reynolds Jr. was scheduled to die today, but the governor of Ohio halted the execution so that Reynolds could be given medical treatment and be in tip-top shape for the lethal injection.
Reynolds was found unconscious in his cell on death row last night after swallowing some pills and suffering an overdose. The governor rescheduled the execution for March 16 to give the damned man a chance to recover.
Although you may think Reynolds was trying to kill himself by swallowing the pills, he actually doesn’t want to die. His execution was first scheduled for October 2009, but was postponed to give the state time to review the lethal injection procedure. And why do they need to do that? Reynolds has challenged Ohio’s one-drug lethal injection procedure and just yesterday his attorney filed an appeal with the U.S. Supreme Court, seeking to delay the execution. So no, it’s doubtful that swallowing the pills was an attempted suicide.
Reynolds was sentenced to death for strangling his 67-year-old neighbor to death in her home for beer money in 1994.

Why did this guy even get the death penalty in the first place? I thought the death penalty was supposed to be a last resort for when there is absolutely no chance of rehabilitation? Granted, what he did was horrible and he deserves a decent 20-25 years or so in jail for it – but surely this is the sort of circumstance where rehabilitation into society would be eventually possible?

I’m sorry, but we need to stop wasting tax payer money, if someone is to be executed, who gives a crap if they aren’t in perfect health? The man killed his mother, strangled the life out of her, for beer money, he doesn’t deserve mercy.

I know it seems like a waste of taxpayer money for some people, but what if the medication he overdosed on interfered with the lethal injection, causing him not to die, or to die in a cruel or unusual way? The state is just trying to cover it’s bases.
