The paper is called “Is genetic diversity associated with mating success in humans?” published this year in Animal Behavior.
I hate when people report on science without (A) not understanding the difference between correlation and causation and (B) not citing their sources.
1) The average number of total sex partners was THREE.
2) Remember that “number of sexual partners” and “infidelity” are two entirely different things. The study has nothing to do with sleeping around.
3) The study implies that women have more sexual partners because there is a correlation between attractiveness to the opposite sex and MHC genetic diversity, as it is believed to be an indicator of genetic compatability… These girls likely have more partners because more people want to have sex with them, not because they are “sluts”

Too bad that genes like that are only turned on if the right environmental cue activates it. Many genes need the proper cue to turn on, which is why there is so much variability between each person when our genetic makeup is more than 99% identical. We’re talking about Major Histocompatability Genes in this paper (MHC), which are really just a bunch of genes essential for immunity and autoimmune response, that have largely conserved markers. The theory is that these women are more “attractive” to men because they are either (a) of “better genetic quality” in general, which manifests as physical attractiveness or (b) (I think this is more likely) their pheromones “smell” better, leading men to be unconsciously more attracted to them and therefore more likely to bang them.
I am not arguing the epigenetics is probably responsible for the majority of their behavior, but its not necessarily relevant to the argument in this case… unless theres some sort of environmental influence on MHCs that I’m not aware of?

Don’t know about you people, but have you ever looked at the environmental factors that affect the personality/disposition of people? Like for instance, their upbringing which is so quickly discredited here? Women and men (yes both) have a higher probability/tendency to have higher amounts of sexual partners if a) They are from a broken home; b) Have a low IQ; c) If they have had parents with a low level of affluence in their childhood (I use affluence instead of class due to the fact that some one can be in the higher classes yet still be poorly educated or be in the lower classes and be well educated) and d) Their exposure to “subversive” elements aka drugs, illegal behavior etc.
An interesting point here is though that on average men tend to lose their virginity at a later point than women, and on average have less sexual partners than women(At least in my country, thank you census) The reason there is this disparity is because there is a minority group in the male population (top 10%) that have massive sexual partner counts, and the sexual partner counts of women tend to be higher but more evenly spread (also if you don’t know what mathematics and in particular statistics are do not comment, yes my response requires knowledge of the bell curve, the mean, and the standard deviation).

Also, the data in this study is normalized for attitudes towards sex. They conducted a survey first to evaluate each person’s background, and adjusted their “sexual success” accordingly. Thus women who from backgrounds where they were not interested in more than a few sexual partners who dated 3 men were rated higher than women were were interested in many sexual partners and had dated 3 men. You can argue whether or not that is a fair manipulation, but it likely does smooth out some of that environmental mess.
Keep in mind also that this study was published in Animal Behavior, which publishes papers about environmental influence on genetics and behavior all the time.
(PS: your last sentence is probably the most condescending thing I have ever read… You realize this is a humor column yes?)
