FPS gaming from a female’s POV

Posted January 13th, 2010 at 3:03 pm by

female-gamer

Being a female FPS gamer isn’t easy.  In MMORPG’s such as WoW and Everquest, you’ll often find that the female avatars get all kinds of free shit from the desperate male players.  Sadly, First Person Shooter communities are usually not as hospitable.  Over the last few weeks I’ve monitored quite a few online Quake Live matches.  Here are some common phrases that are used when a female is encountered on a server.  The number next to the bubble indicates how often it can/will be used on any given day.

Hold on a second. So you leave a WoW like environment for that of a game like Quake and you expect the other players to suddenly be nice when the mission of the game is to KILL YOU? (virtually, mind you)
*scoff* In a FPS shooter game, insult is part of the experience and that transcends genders.

“Suck my dick bitch,” “Make me a sammich.” That’s what I hear all the time. Doesn’t usually bother me though as I’ve got a lovely bunch to do all the talking back for me.

Although none usually say anything after the game they just lost is over.. :)

So what you’re saying is that if a girl gets insulted playing an online fps its something to be amazed/disgusted about, but if a guy plays an online fps and gets insulted it doesn’t matter?

If theres one thing that i cannot stand its when females play video games and expect to be fed with a golden spoon and have their backs patted the entire time. If you really want equality, then take the insults and don’t act like a baby about everything.

Simply put, you’re playing an online fps. People are gonna say things. Get over it.

I know, I shouldn’t have an opionion, (male,) but, honestly, I wish there was a way to send *****slaps digitally. Just have the servers save voice coms for 15 minutes, register a complaint, have the moderators listen to it, then press the “Thwap” button, and have the individual get a slap across the face, hear (in his own headset) what he said wrong, and a message should be posted on the screen “User has been sent a message.”

I know, I know, it’s wrong to hit others, but, one can dream, can’t they?

Heck, when I was originally pondering this idea it was the “Does someone have to choke a ***** button.”

You know, this is how they should be treated. It’s called equality. If boys sit online and call each other “fags” or “niggers” (pardon the words, just quoting a majority of people), they we should be praising the fact that they are treating women just like the treat everyone else. Beats giving them a break, that’s descrimination! …and no, I’m totally serious. That’s REAL equality!

So, is there a point to this post? Are you lamenting that you have developed an expectation for preferential treatment, as in WoW? Are you suggesting that you are mistreated in FPS because you’re female? (Everyone is mistreated in FPS! Typical FPS male to male response; ‘I’m gonna pwne you! Then I’m gonna skull **** you’re corpse like I did you whore mother last night!)

I’m not at all surprised that extremely graphic and violent games like FPS elicit extremely hostile comments from the players. Are you? I’m confused because I don;t understand the point of your post.

Count me in with the people who are wondering how this is any different from the abuse that male gamers take from the maladjusted basement-dwelling 13-year-olds that populate the average FPS environment. I don’t suppose that anyone should be surprised if the insults aimed at female gamers are tailored to better infuriate the target, considering the motivation behind the insults in the first place. If you don’t like listening to idiots mouthing off, play a game where you can mute voice chat.

Part of the issue is that guys, generally, insult each other freely. It’s just part of casual, friendly conversation. Racial, ethnic, sexual, religious, etc slurs get exchanged commonly between male friends (In my experience). Even quite mean spirited things (mocking dead family members, say) is fine and generally it’s understood that you’re going to try to get under each others skin. This activity isn’t completely restricted to the male gender (I have known a good number of girls who could hold their own in such conversations) but it seems less common among mixed groups. Online gamers simply treat women the way they treat everyone else. The expectations of politeness are not there. This doesn’t necessarily indicate bias, just a tendency to push other peoples buttons.

Now, some gamers are, doubtlessly, racist sexist morons, and I certainly don’t treat people who are not close friends like this, but a casual, anonymous atmosphere is going to be thick with insults no matter what. Sexist comments are just a way to press the buttons of a female player.

What annoys me with playing FPS’s with girls is how annoying most are. They have this “I’m a chick gamer” god complex and want to flaunt their vagina’s in everyone’s face while being total bitches.

Wish I could get my gf to play online. I’m curious to see what it’s like from a girl perspective.

I have to agree as well; I *never* announce I’m female in any games I play. This is the main reason I don’t like playing with females, period. I’m not going to talk shit by saying “We’re girls, we’re gonna kick your ass!” or something equally stupid. I see it whenever I happen to play against a girl, I look at their profile and it has something along the lines of “You just got beat by a girl!” Except with our team, she just lost and usually sucks.. But there are some GREAT female gamers out there that will give ANYONE a run for their money.

Majority of the time my gamertag will give it away or if I’m talking to someone on my party in the lobby, they’ll make a comment and it starts from that. Otherwise I don’t give a shit about the other team knowing I’m female. Don’t need to get messages asking for my facebook, or if I’m fat, yadda yadda yadda.

The complaint isn’t the insults themselves (though arguably maybe it should be), it’s the sexist content of the insults. You wanna talk trash? Fine. Whether it’s right or wrong it is a part of these games. But it’s only “equality” if you start telling male players “cock or GTFO”.

i agree, and to some extent it should just be about the insults and where they occur but it seems more apparent that it is the zeal that a lot of you seem to show when your able to actually insult a “real girl”….not just call each other girls. And since so many of you seem so quick to insult one an other, yet most of your insults refer to females-and call it acceptable because why….certainly not because you don’t like female gamers, because this has been so clearly demonstrated in these comments.

to be perfectly honest, it’s not just video games. the general public is extremely stupid and ignorant, and the ignorance just comes to surface when everyone is aware that their behavier will have no consequence. it should be very clear that we live in a society based on double standards and whether it’s race, religion or gender people will allways descriminate. I can barely join a game without having to hear some stupid american go on a rant about how my gamertag sucks because it doesn’t have the words Sniper, Viper, Assassin, prodigy or 69 in it. I guess I’m just not cool enough to let other people define the way I think.

Interesting post because it documents the common insults towards the female gender. Of course as others have pointed out, it’s pretty much the same for everyone, guys included. Trash talking and crude/coarse insults are part of the game.

As for the nature of the insults, it’s partly gender politics – the frustration of having to compete for women when the majority of women think that your interests (combat videogames) are pathetic and juvenile. It’s true, it’s hard to find women who share your interests if you enjoy computer/console gaming, so this is reflected in the coarsest terms of degredation during play.

But the insults are just part of the experience, you just have to deal with them or gtfo. Get all your female friends into gaming; redress the gender imbalance, then you’ll see some of the more specific insults fade out of use. But don’t expect a comfortable environment where conflict is the name of the game.

Any serious female gamer will go to extreme lengths to HIDE the fact that they’re female precisely because they want an equal playing field and to be judged on that basis. Don’t have a girly-sounding tag, don’t use a mic, common sense. I have little respect for any female player who makes their gender known outside of close clan or guild groups, and even then there is definetly good motivation to avoid causing bullshit drama. Searching for an ego boost on the internet based on your assets is pretty lame.

Sorry pal, that’s BS. The onus on is on the gaming community to give female players a level playing field with males not on female gamers to pretend to be male so the topic doesn’t come up.

You’re talking about a ‘don’t ask/don’t tell’ arrangement and that’s never fair to the people who have to constantly worry about their ‘secret’ getting out.

There’s a difference between insulting and just degrading a woman. Personally i can deal with insults, I just yell back. But if it’s just bashing cuz it’s a woman, I think that person must be a lonely guy, because with that attitude you won’t keep a woman. And for the women out there who can’t deal with any kind of insult, don’t play games, or.. especially this: dont put your picture on your profile and don’t spread the fact you’re a woman. Face it, if women want to act like an attentionwhore, they should face the consequences as well.

All in all, insulting is part of games, being degraded and attacked personally isn’t, it’s like yelling ‘nigger’ to a black man or ‘fag’ to a gay person.

I’ve gotten so disgusted with the attitudes of some players in Quake Live, I wanted to scream. But, what I do now is just leave the game and join a different one. I do know some people playing who don’t act like a**holes, and tend to gather with them when possible. But, sometimes you just can’t wait… hehe. I do have one trick for the truly obnoxious; I tell them I love them. I hug them, flatter them with obviously fake trophies, and many times they calm down. But, its just when I”M in the mood. Hang in there, some of them are pretty nice.

There is a lot of smack talk on servers. It doesn’t matter whether you are male or female, you will get insulted as a matter of course, especially if you suck.

Females are sensitive to being insulted. I think this is the main reason there aren’t as many female gamers as there should be. We aren’t used to the insensitive male way of interacting and find it to be a turn off.

The bottom line is that gaming can be harsh, especially in the FPS world, and female gamers need to develop a thick skin. (Because the guys aren’t changing their ways.)

And this is why your boy’s club community get branded sexist, racist, homophobic etc. Because from behind the anonymnity you demand the right to demean each other under the guise of “friendly hazing” -except you aren’t being friendly to those groups are you? Not the way you are friendly to the rest of the “boys.” Next time your out try and tell someone that they are a “faggot” to their face and see how “in the club” you feel.
