Soon after Al Gore invented the internet, we were blessed with our first ever trolls. Today trolls cover a wide region of areas, ranging from competitive gaming, to online forums. The following nine examples were/are the cream of the crop, in their given field.
Video Compiler (Ventrilo) – His most notable win was over an angry mother who appeared to be the co-leader of an online guild. VC will casually join a ventrilo and start using sound boards to make his victims go completely insane. He has been banned from servers more times than you can count, but always finds a way to come back. Check out the rest of his work here.
RBX (Yahoo Answers) – Most Yahoo trolls use the submit option to get a rise out of their peers. RBX on the other hand will actually “try” to answer questions. Check out the rest of his answer archive here.
Dancing Bear (Stickam) – Ryan Perera took it upon himself to raid stickam and ustream for one month straight. The result was priceless. Read more about Ryan here. via Mashable
Jason Fortuny (Craigslist) – In September of 2006, Jason decided to copy another Craigslist poster, purportedly a real woman seeking a dominant male partner. He received 178 responses. Was this enough to satisfy his trollness? No, Jason then decided to post ALL the responses, including pics and contact info, on a website called Encyclopedia Dramatica. He described it as “the Craigslist Experiment”, and encouraged others to further identify the respondents. Continue reading about his 75,000 lawsuit here. via fileunderi
Joke-Explainer (Reddit.com) – Joke-Explainer could be one of the most loved trolls that is currently still active. Joke-Explainer doesn’t miss a beat when it comes to the most obvious jokes and puns on Reddit either. You can view all of his explanations here.

David Thorne (Email) – David Thorne is the man responsible for trying to pay his overdue account with a picture of a spider that he drew in MSPaint. Read the full thread here.
Adrian Chen (Craigslisting) – Adrian Chen created a tumblr site dedicated to craigslist replies. The level of detail he uses is completely off of the charts. Most people have no idea that they’re being trolled at all. Check out one of our favorites here.
The Team Roomba Griefers (TF2) – A self explanatory video of the most hilarious griefing you’ll ever see in Team Fortress 2. Unfortunately the HQ version has been removed from Vimeo (the sound is still fairly clear). Skip to 5:50 for the trivia.
Lowtax (ICQ) – In the early stages of our current decade we had an abundance of what is now known as ‘ICQ spam’. Rich (Lowtax) Kyanka (from somethingawful.com) combated these ICQ downgrades in IM form. He was able to shame any spammer or troll into logging off by constructing sentences that would baffle even the best. The example we’ve decided to use is an interaction between himself, and some kid who had just been banned from the SA forums. Read it here.
